San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing (PlayStation) is an arcade-style racing game known for its high-speed physics, wild stunts, and a dynamic urban environment based on the city of San Francisco. The PlayStation version, released in 1998 by Midway, is a port of the popular 1996 arcade hit by Atari Games.
Gameplay and features
- Extreme stunts and shortcuts: The core of the game is its "extreme racing" mechanics, which emphasize finding hidden shortcuts and pulling off huge jumps over the hilly streets of San Francisco. Unlike standard racing titles, the game encourages a more aggressive, risk-taking style of driving to gain an advantage.
- Customizable races: The PlayStation version offers a variety of ways to play, with six tracks that can be raced forwards, backward, or mirrored for a total of 24 possible configurations. Players can also adjust the time of day and weather conditions, such as night or snow, to add variety.
-
Multiple modes: The game includes several modes to keep gameplay fresh:
- Grand Prix: Accumulate points over a series of ten races against three computer-controlled opponents.
- Explosive Mode: Race to the finish while maintaining a speed above 60 MPH; if you drop below the limit, your car explodes.
- Time Pickup: Collect hourglass icons to gain more race time for yourself while taking it away from your opponents.
- Two-Player Mode: Race against a friend using a horizontal or vertical split screen.
- Vehicle customization: Players can choose from a roster of eight unique race cars, which can be further customized with different colors and transmissions. Four difficulty levels—Beginner, Advanced, Expert, and Extreme—also affect the cars' handling.
- Hidden content: The game features hidden keys and secret cars scattered throughout the courses. Finding and collecting these keys can unlock new vehicles for use.
